SPRINGFIELD - A Charter van that had been involved in an accident Tuesday morning on Roosevelt Avenue burst into flames, which forced the road to be closed briefly to traffic.

The driver of the van was not injured, but one person from the other vehicle involved in the accident was taken to the hospital by ambulance, said Dennis Leger, aide to Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant.

Leger said the van was destroyed by the fire.

After the accident, the van went off the road and then a fire started in the engine compartment.

Leger said fire investigators determined the fire was caused by electro-mechanical failure.

The accident occurred at about 9:45 a.m. on a section of Roosevelt Avenue just before the entrance to Blunt Park.

Springfield police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said the accident remains under investigation.
