It is with deepest regret and sorrow to report the line-of-duty death of two members of IAFF Local 834 - Bridgeport, Connecticut. Lieutenant Steven J. Velasquez, 40, and Fire Fighter Michel Baik, 49, were killed while fighting a residential fire on Saturday, July 24, 2010.
The funeral service for Brother Velasquez will be held on Friday, July 30 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 359 Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut 06604, (203) 368-6777.
The funeral service for Brother Baik will be held on Friday, July 30 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, 5458 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut 06604, (203) 372-9767.
A Collation honoring both our Brothers will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010 at the conclusion of the services at the Arena at Harbor Yard, 600 Main Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Local 834 and the Bridgeport Fire Department have established a fund to support the families of the two fallen fire fighters. Donations to the "Bridgeport Fallen Firefighters Fund" can be made through the Bridgeport Fire Department Employees Federal Credit Union at 3115 Madison Ave., Bridgeport CT 06606, Attn: Bridgeport Fallen Firefighters Fund. Members are requested to assemble at Steel Point at the corner of E Main St. & Stratford Ave Bridgeport by 8 a.m. Shuttle Buses will transport members to St. Augustine. Following the services for Lt. Velasquez members will be bused to St Nicholas Church for the funeral for F.F. Baike. Following that service buses will transport members to Harbor Yard Arena for a collation, or to Steele Point

We are planning a bus trip to leave for Bridgeport at 6:00am Friday (from Station 9). This will be on a first come first serve basis until bus is full then any remaining members will have to follow in their own vehicles. FULL DRESS UNIFORM is prescribed. Bus will return to Springfield by 9:00pm.

SPRINGFIELD RETIREMENT BOARD
An election is to be held on August 3rd, 2010 for the purpose of electing a member or retiree of the Springfield Retirement System to serve on the Springfield Retirement Board for a term of three (3) years, said to commence on August 15, 2010.
All holding membership in the Springfield Retirement System may qualify as a candidate by filing with the Springfield Retirement Board a nomination paper containing the signatures and addresses of at least twenty (20) members and/or retirees of this system.
The nonmination papers must be filed on or before 12:00pm on Monday, June 21, 2010. Nomination papers may be obtained at the Retirement Office located at 70 Tapley Street, Springfield, Ma.

"Smoke Showing" is a short film that visually demonstrates the dangers and challenges faced by firefighters during a structural fire. This film will serve to educate recruit firefighters, elected officials and the public in fire operations. "Smoke Showing" demonstrates the need for an aggressive interior attack coupled with adequate resources in order to save lives and reduce property loss. The film is opened by the cast of "Rescue Me."
