Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger said the fire was reported at about 2 p.m., and first fire units arrived at the scene about two minutes later.

When the department first arrived, flames could be seen shooting out of second and third floor windows, he said.

Heat from the fire caused the vinyl siding on the house next door, at 60-62 Monrose St. to melt, Leger said.

By 3 p.m., firefighters had beat down the flames, but smoke was still coming out of the roof.

No injuries were reported.

The house is located directly across State Street from American International College.
