Mark Giannini was a 20 year employee for the Springfield Fire Department. His career began on April 28, 1997, and he retired on May 17, 2017. He was promoted to Fire Lieutenant on August 11, 2014. On September 10, 2015 he responded to a structure fire at 21 Fort Pleasant Avenue as the Fire Lieutenant on Engine 3. During the process of extinguishing the fire, he collapsed inside the structure due to chest pains. Long story short, after further tests and examinations, it was discovered that he had stomach cancer. Since that discovery, it’s been a roller-coaster ride for him and his entire family. Besides the numerous visits to the local doctors, he had to travel back and forth to Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Mark wants to tell his story to the members of the Springfield Fire Department. His words are, “I want them to know and see that cancer is real, and what I had to go through while fighting this. Wearing your PPE, and taking care of your health is the number one priority!”
If you are able to attend, please come and listen to his testimony on Thursday August 11th @ 10 AM at 1212 Carew Street, in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
Thank you All,
