SPRINGFIELD – Firefighters rescued a man who got stuck in the thick mud Sunday morning at Watershops Pond.

Firefighters used a portable sled and ropes and placed ladders on the ground to improve their footing. No one was injured in the rescue, said Fire Capt. Drew Garrett.

The city has been gradually drawing down Watershops Pond to prepare for an estimated $3 million flood control project, likely to begin in March of 2021, to repair and make improvements to the dam.

People have been warned not to cross in the area due to the thick mud and an active stream. During the drawdown the city found a host of submerged junk including a half-dozen cars, at least two guns, a safe and debris from the June 1, 2011 tornado.
