7/28/2020 - Springfield firefighters on the scene of a house fire on Commonwealth Avenue. The home was heavily damaged and two families were displaced.

SPRINGFIELD - An early morning fire on Tuesday displaced 6 residents and caused major damage to a two-family home at 24-26 Commonwealth Ave., a fire official said.

Capt. Drew Piemonte, Springfield Fire Department spokesman, said no one was injured in the 2 a.m. fire, but the two families are in need of a place to stay. City building inspectors are due to examine the building today to determine if it should be condemned.

The residents, two families of three people each, all managed to escape without injury, he said.

The fire appears to have started on a rear porch on the second floor, and from there it extended to the attic, Piemonte said.

The third floor is considered a total loss and portions of the roof sustained significant damage too.

Firefighters had the flames under control in about 30 minutes, and then spent three hours chasing hot spots before the scene was cleared at around 5 a.m., he said.

Piemonte said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. It remains under investigation by the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad.

According to city records, the 2 1/2 story home at Commonwealth Avenue andTrenton Street was constructed in around 1912, and has a total valuation of $180,000. It has been owned by Dawa Tamang and Tiwari Durga since 2015.
