SPRINGFIELD – Firefighters responded to a porch fire Sunday morning that was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.

The fire was reported at about 10 a.m. at 107 Maplewood Terrace. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly before it spread to the interior of the house, Fire Capt. Drew Piemonte said.

The Department’s Arson and Bomb Squad investigated and quickly determined it was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.

Multiple serious fires in May were caused by embers from cigarettes and other smoking materials, prompting the State Fire Marshal’s Office to put out an advisory warning people about improper disposal of smoking materials.

People are advised to extinguish cigarettes in a metal can with sand or water. If they are thrown into dried leaves, potted plants, fresh mulch, or trash containers when they are not completely extinguished butts can smolder and reignite, officials said.
