SPRINGFIELD -- An early morning basement fire displaced 12 people and caused extensive damage to a Laurelton Street home, city fire officials reported Saturday.
Crews responded to reports of a basement fire at 195 Laurelton St. just before 2 a.m., according to Dennis Leger, aide to Fire Commissioner Bernard J. Calvi.
Twelve residents escaped the home before firefighters arrived. One man, however, was sent to Baystate Medical Center with chest pain, Leger reported.
The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad is investigating the cause of the fire, which is estimated to have caused $100,000 in damage, Leger said.
The Red Cross is assisting the 12 displaced residents, according to Leger.
