Fire Destroys Springfield Home

By Mike Skurko

A fire destroyed a home at 33-35 Hyde Avenue in Springfield on Monday, leaving 3 people uninjured but homeless. The fire broke out just after noon.

One woman was home with her dog on the first floor when she said she smelled the smoke and immediately ran out of the house. Neighbors also quickly realized something was wrong, just moments before seeing the entire front side of the house on fire.

"I was smelling something like it was burning, and [my friend] said they're probably doing some barbequing around here.” said Felipe Campos, who was visiting next door. “Her daughter came from the basement, and said ‘mom the house next door - there's a lot of smoke coming out.’

Witnesses say the front of the house quickly shot up in flames, and officials deemed it a total loss.

“There was a lot of smoke, thick black smoke, and the front porch was engulfed in fire." said Campos.

Luckily, the at-home victim only suffered from minor chest pains due to the smoke, according to Dennis Leger of the Springfield Fire Department. A neighbor running for help suffered a twisted ankle while running from her neighboring home.

Fire officials estimate the damage at $150,000, as well as $15,000 in siding damage to the adjacent home.

The three victims are now being assisted by the American Red Cross, and will continue offering services for the next few days. Officials are still searching for the cause of the fire.
