SPRINGFIELD - A pedestrian was struck and pinned underneath a van Monday afternoon on West Columbus Avenue just past State Street.

Springfield firefighters worked to free the unidentified man from underneath the vehicle. He was loaded onto a gurney and loaded on an ambulance to be taken to Baystate Medical Center.

There was no word on his condition. He appeared bloody but conscious when loaded into the ambulance.

The front end of the van appeared to have a large dent in it.

The accident was reported just after 4 p.m. said Dennis Leger, aide to Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant.

The accident tied up traffic along West Columbus and the Memorial Bridge briefly until the scene was cleared.

The accident remains under investigation by Springfield police.
