SPRINGFIELD – A fire late Friday night caused significant damage to a three-story home at Allen and Malden Streets, and displaced at least three people, according to the fire department.

Fire Department spokesman Dennis G. Leger said he is aware of three tenants displaced by the fire, and there could be more.

The Pioneer Valley chapter of the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist with emergency shelter for tenants, he said.

There were no injuries.

The fire at 32-34 Malden St. started in a first-floor apartment and spread up to the attic and through the roof.

Police blocked off Malden Street and also Allen Street between Oakland and Revere streets.

The fire was reported at 10:50 p.m. and the first fire units were on scene within three minutes, he said.

The fire sent out a heavy smoke throughout Forest Park and parts of Old Hill and Upper Hill. Firefighters on a ladder cut a hole in the roof to help vent some of the smoke, while other firefighters could be seen going through each floor looking for flames.

Firefighters were expected to remain on scene for several hours.

Leger said he did not have an estimate of damage to the house but it is likely to be significant.

As of late Friday, no cause had been determined. The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad was on scene to investigate.
